He might claim that, but the truth is he probably keeps the money here because he believes the acting Grand Master will neither spend it nor reveal its hiding place. This money was originally set aside to buy the Dandelion Wine as an offering to the Archon, and has now been used to reward the Honorary Knight who saved Varka — or perhaps that knight might use it to treat every friend who helped save Varka.
